    Compassionate Release

    On April 5, 2023, the United States Sentencing Commission approved significant changes to the federal sentencing guidelines that will, among other things, expand access to and eligibility for compassionate release for those being held.

    Advocate of the Month

    We are pleased to honor Ali Toumekian as our Advocate of the Month for April 2023 for serving as the Young Lawyer Division’s District 2 Representative and acting as a member of the Connecticut state delegation for ABA Day 2023. Ali is an Associate Attorney practicing trusts & estates and family law at the firm of Zeldes, Needle, & Cooper, P.C. and is a new face in the ABA. She was recently elected to serve a second two-year term as YLD District 2 Representative and will be serving during the 2023-2024 bar year as an Affiliates Vice Director on the YLD council. When not practicing law or volunteering her time with the ABA and the Connecticut Bar Association, you can find Ali hosting weekly Tuesday night bar trivia in her adopted hometown of Milford, CT.

    Member Information on Congress.gov Users can now access Member Information on Congress.gov along with additional features. To locate a Member of Congress, search by name or state in the “Contact Your Member” box on the right side of the Congress.gov homepage or the Find Your Members page. Input an address to get a list of representatives and senators for that area, then select the “Alerts” link to get alerts for those Members, or the “Contact” link to go directly to the contact page on that Member’s website.

    The ABA Washington Letter is a monthly publication produced by the Governmental Affairs Office to report and analyze congressional and executive branch action on legislative issues of interest to the ABA and the legal profession. The newsletter highlights ABA involvement in the federal legislative process and focuses on the association's legislative and governmental priorities and other issues on which the ABA has policy.
