Immediate Past President Carolyn B. Lamm appeared Feb. 1 on an American Constitution Society (ACS) panel discussing delays in the federal judicial nomination and confirmation process. White House Counsel Robert F. Bauer began the event by emphasizing the high number of federal judicial vacancies and said the Obama administration will do what it takes to work with Congress to break the confirmation gridlock that is “profoundly troubling.” The ABA has urged the administration and Congress to act promptly on nominations. Lamm, a partner at the law firm of White and Case, applauded efforts in that direction. She also acknowledged the concern of Chief Justice John Roberts, who focused on the issue in his recent Year-end Report on the Judiciary. Also participating in the event were: moderator Caroline Fredrickson, ACS executive director; Makan Delrahim, a shareholder at the law firm of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and former staff director and chief counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee; Lamm; and University of North Carolina law professor William P. Marshall, former deputy White House counsel and deputy assistant to President Clinton.
