VAWA Overview
The Violence Against Women Act is one of the pillars of the government’s response to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. First signed into law in 1994, this landmark legislation authorizes several grant programs to provide services and housing to survivors and training to improve the legal response to gender-based violence. Congress passed VAWA reauthorization after agreeing to include it in the FY 2022 omnibus spending bill. Now, Congress needs to fully fund VAWA programs to assure access to services for survivors.
