In June 2023, ABA ROLI launched the Political Accountability and Leadership program in Zambia. The program seeks to strengthen the capacity of lawyers and CSO partners in the community to advocate for policy, legal, and democratic reforms with government entities and stakeholders to ultimately support the Zambian electoral process and increase the inclusion of women and youth in politics and elections.
Zambia Background
From August 2012 to July 2014, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI)—supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor—implemented a program to enhance Zambian judicial actors’ capacity to protect human rights through trainings that were led by local stakeholders. ABA ROLI supported local partners to conduct assessment on judicial and community needs, to lead magistrate trainings on legal protections of human rights and to organize national strategic planning sessions for the creation of formal judicial-training mechanisms.
