From 2018-2022, the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) worked in Ethiopia on the Professionalizing African Union Staff on Rule of Law Initiatives program. It was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the African Union—the pan-African inter-governmental organization based in Addis Ababa—with emphasis on advancing its rule of law mission and mandate in the region. Adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020, ABA ROLI organized a variety of training sessions for African Union staff on topics such as legal drafting, privileges and immunities, international humanitarian law, trial advocacy and litigation, judgement drafting, transitional justice, and employment law. ABA ROLI organized a virtual symposium that brought together members from the African Court of Human and People’s Rights, the European Human Rights Court, the Inter-American Court, and Economic Community of West African States.
