On November 19, 2024, American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) officially launched its Combat Trafficking in Persons and Sexual Violence program as a collaborative initiative to address the critical issues of sexual violence and trafficking in person in Guatemala. The program will implement best practices through the Government of Guatemala’s Secretariat against Sexual Violence, Exploitation, and Trafficking in Persons (SVET), which operates under the Vice President´s Office.
The event was led by SVET and featured prominent dignitaries, including Guatemala’s Vice President, Ms. Karin Herrera; Danisa Ramírez, Executive Secretary of SVET; and Vice Ministers from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education, among others. Representing international support, Chargé d’Affaires Patrick Ventrell from the US Embassy in Guatemala also attended. The program is funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
