April 8, 2024, Belo Horizonte – The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) visited the Slave Labor and Human Trafficking Clinic of the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil [Portuguese, Clínica de Trabalho Escravo e Tráfico de Pessoas (CTETP) da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)]. The visit’s main objective was to present to the students at the law school and explore potential partnerships with UFMG.
Fernanda Brandão, ABA ROLI staff member, visited the UFMG Clinic–made up of teachers, researchers, and students engaged in the fight against slave labor and human trafficking. During the visit, Fernanda Brandão learned about the work carried out by the Clinic, which is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence in research, awareness, and legal assistance activities for victims of these crimes.
ABA ROLI recognizes the fundamental importance of the work carried out by the UFMG Clinic in promoting human rights and combating the exploitation of people in vulnerable situations. The visit established a fruitful dialogue with future collaborations and joint projects in mind.
The rapprochement between ABA ROLI and the UFMG Clinic represents a significant step in expanding support networks and enhancing actions to combat human trafficking and slave labor in Brazil. The partnership between both institutions will further strengthen the capacity to act in the legal field, assist victims, and promote effective public policies to prevent and combat these serious crimes.
