Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

The American Bar Association Celebrates Diversity and the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The ABA Offices (Chicago and DC) will be closed on Monday, January 16, 2017, as we join our nation in celebrating this man and his legacy.

Today - The King Holiday is celebrated in U.S. installations and is observed by local groups in more than 100 other nations.

The King Holiday should highlight remembrance and celebration and should encourage people everywhere to reflect on the principles of nonviolent social change and racial equality as espoused by Martin Luther King, Jr. It should be a day of community and humanitarian service, and interracial corporation.

What is the MLK Day of Service

In 1994 Congress designated the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service - a "day on, not a day off."

Why Serve on MLK Day of Service

This is a way to transform the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and teachings into community action.
