Samsung Has Too Much Apple

Vol. 17 No. 3

In August 2012, a federal jury in San Jose, California, awarded Apple Inc. (Apple) $1.049 billion in damages for patent infringement. Apple’s award is the third-largest in the history of U.S. patent litigation—and the award may grow. Add to this the fact Apple has suits pending around the globe, and the potential damages grow even larger. While this may seem to be a mere battle over money, this decision may eventually affect our everyday lives, increasing the cost and stifling future innovation of our ubiquitous smartphones.
