What do you get when you match more than 350 young lawyer volunteers from more than 40 states with more than 10,000 new bar admittees?

The ABA YLD’s flagship membership outreach program, Touch 10,000.

The program recently surpassed its goal of identifying and matching 10,000 newly barred lawyers with young lawyer members of the ABA!

How it works

Twice a year—Fall and Spring—approximately 200 young lawyer leaders (Ambassadors) conduct an extensive outreach campaign to connect with new bar admittees across the country and welcome them to the ABA. “Touch 10,000 Ambassadors help create an invaluable membership pipeline into the ABA YLD by fostering personal connections between current members and new bar admittees,” said Emily Masalski, Touch 10,000 Coordinator and ABA YLD Membership Board member. The goal of establishing these connections is to encourage new lawyers to take advantage of their one-year free membership in the ABA and to share with them the various opportunities that exist in developing personally and professionally within the ABA and the ABA YLD.

After the initial outreach has been conducted, Touch 10,000 relies on young lawyer leaders in each state, our State Coordinators, to oversee their state’s Ambassadors. “State Coordinators not only serve as a resource for all of the ambassadors within their respective states, but they also organize ‘Meet & Greet’ events at the end of each outreach,” said Ross Feldmann, State Coordinator for and a member of the ABA YLD’s Membership Board. “These events have been extraordinarily successful in creating a face for the ABA for many young lawyers in their first year of involvement with the organization.” The Meet & Greets also help connect new bar admittees, Ambassadors, and ABA and ABA YLD leaders on a local level and acclimate the new lawyers to the ABA at large.

The next step

Following the success of Touch 10,000, the YLD has launched Section Connect, a program to place new bar admittees within ABA groups that correspond to their practice area or areas of interest. To kick-off Section Connect, the YLD will be hosting its first-ever Section Connect Fair on Thursday, August 4, 2011, 5–6 p.m., during the ABA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada. During the Fair, new bar admittees and other YLD members can network with members of the ABA’s various Sections, Divisions, and Forums and find out about membership benefits in these different organizations.
