TIPS held this bar year’s Fall Leadership Meeting at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, October 12–16, 2011, in crisp, cool Seattle, Washington. The ABA Young Lawyers Division also held its Fall Meeting at the nearby Hyatt at Olive 8, allowing TIPS and YLD members to mingle all weekend.

Nearly 300 attorneys gathered to attend the first live CLE program of TIPS’s Disaster Preparedness and Response Initiative, “Homeland Security 10 Years Later—How Innovation and Technology Have Changed the Approach to Homeland Security Since the 9/11 Attack.” This well-received CLE was followed by the Joint Welcome, Diversity in the Profession, and Pursuit of Justice Awards Reception, at which Seattle Attorney Michael Withey received the prestigious Pursuit of Justice award for his dedication to serving the public over the course of his 37-year career. Afterward, TIPS’s Task Force on Outreach to Young Lawyers hosted a well-attended welcome reception with the YLD, which sparked many great connections!

One of Seattle’s mottos is the “City Of Goodwill,” and TIPS members certainly experienced that spirit as they participated in the Section’s fall public service project at Seattle’s YWCA. Volunteers hosted bingo games, performed kitchen duty, and organized donated items. TIPS’s Law in Public Service Committee also raised more than $500 and donated six boxes of clothes and personal items to the YWCA. On that free afternoon, other TIPSters enjoyed golf or toured Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. Friday evening, some TIPSters joined many YLDers for musical exhibits, dinner, and dancing at Seattle’s Experience Music Project. Next door, several Leadership Academy members and alums reunited for dinner at the Space Needle.

Early risers on Saturday morning participated in a “Denise’s Dash” fun run/walk, honoring the memory of TIPS Meetings Manager Denise St. Fort. Following many committee business meetings, members and guests enjoyed a lovely wine-tasting dinner and reception, featuring local wineries, a lesson on the wine industry, and jazz entertainment. The evening also included recognition of this year’s Honor Roll recipients: Peter A Antonucci, James J.S. Holmes, Susan Holden, Steven G. Hall, and Harmony I. Loube.

Many thanks to TIPS Chair Randy Aliment, arrangements chair Jessie Harris, TIPS staff members, and all involved for their hard work on another fantastic meeting!
