Our Board of Governors is dedicated to continuing and building upon our predecessors’ momentum and great work. In doing so, we provide you with a Division working solely for your benefit. Our staff and leaders work hard to bring you four practical skills/moot court competitions that will bolster your résumé and give you on-the-job experience. Keep an eye out at your schools for these competitions: Arbitration, Client Counseling, National Appellate Advocacy, and Negotiation. Depending on your school, you may participate every year of law school! Multiple ABA specialty practice areas are open for students to join, and many of them are free. If you are particularly interested in a section, then let us know! We can connect you with student liaisons within each ABA entity for networking purposes. Your membership in the Division gives you access to the ABA Career Center, as well as, invited to attend several events throughout the year. You can expect e-mails from your Circuit Governors for more details on those events as they draw near.
Along with making you a more marketable job candidate, the Division offers personal benefits. You can seek a leadership role within the Division. You are eligible to purchase affordable auto, home, and renters insurance. And you receive a free one-year membership in the ABA after graduation. I encourage you to take advantage of all that the Division and your ABA membership have to offer. Reach out to your circuit governor and find other useful information at www.americanbar.org/lsd.
So, welcome back! This year we will be taking the temperature on a number of issues that are pressing for law students and developing in the legal community. Do you support a required amount of pro bono volunteer hours to graduate? How keen are you on personal finances, and do you have a plan to handle your debt? What role can you envision technology playing in the ever-changing legal field? More questions are forthcoming. The data we collect will allow us to determine the appropriate course to meet your needs. I look forward to serving you in the coming year.
