Opportunities Abound with Law Student Division

Vol. 42 No. 2

By

I hope you’re peacefully settling into another school year. Here at the ABA Law Student Division, we’re developing some great programs and events that are sure to benefit you, your campus, and your community.

There is funding available to host a first-time event or program. The Division’s Grant Program provides assistance to develop a first-time program. If you’re at an ABA-approved law school and have an idea for an inaugural school organization program that emphasizes diversity, ethics, professionalism training, public interest/service activities, or mental health programming, then you’re eligible for funding. Successful past mental health programs have dealt with substance-abuse treatment and addiction-recovery counseling.

Grant funds aren’t limitless, so don’t wait to apply. Complete the Grant Program application giving us as much information as possible about your event to ensure maximum funding. It’s an easy and great way to help kickoff a long-lasting and successful event! Get more information or the application at http://ambar.org/lsdgrant.

Are you interested in public service and helping your community? The Division’s Work-A-Day Program encourages you to give back in a meaningful way. The Division is developing two themes for this year. In the fall, the Division is addressing human trafficking. We will provide a toolkit and more information to help you plan your event. In the spring, the Division’s theme will be privacy. Visit http://ambar.org/lsdwork for more info.

Also be sure to attend your region’s Fall Leadership (aka “Super Circuit”) meetings. Each fall, law students meet by region to discuss issues facing law students and attend educational workshops on academic success and leadership. The Fall Leadership meetings are free and open to all law students! They offer the opportunity to meet fellow students from other schools, hear from professionals on hot legal topics, and network with lawyers. Check your inbox for e-mails from your Circuit governors or visit the http://www.americanbar.org/groups/law_students/about_us/circuits.html.

I am honored to serve the Division and you as your Secretary-Treasurer for 2013-2014. The Division offers public service and leadership opportunities, practical skills and moot court competitions, a magazine full of career and school tips, and so much more. Please get in touch about any Division activity or if you have any questions about applying for funding through the Grant Program. n
