The ABA Law Student Division elected Joseph Cunningham to serve as Vice Chair–Student Bar Associations, a 3L from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern

Kentucky University. Cunningham hails from a background of ocean living, including work as an ocean engineer, managing marina, and coastal development projects in Florida and the Bahamas.

Now, he undertakes numerous responsibilities as the Vice Chair–SBA, serving as the SBA presidents’ liaison to the Division; managing the relationship between the SBA and ABA organizations at local, regional, and national levels; and helping to promote SBA membership in the Division and the ABA. Previously, Cunningham was an SBA representative, and eventually his law school’s SBA president.

On behalf of the SBA presidents, Cunningham’s role also includes assisting in drafting policy recommendations. Additionally, Cunningham serves as the point person to represent SBAs’ interest with other national organizations’ leadership.

At Northern Kentucky, Cunningham worked on several programs, including trips to observe oral arguments at the Kentucky Supreme Court, organizing networking events, and helping students dress for success with the Chase Closet project. The Chase Closet initiative provides students with either new or gently used proper courtroom attire for free—no questions asked.

Cunningham said he’s ready to step up to the challenge and serve this year’s Vice Chair-SBA.

“It will be a very exciting year for all of us.” n
