Thank you for an incredible year. This year, the Law Student Division continued to meet the needs of law students. New issues reared their heads, as they often do, and the Division addressed them directly. Overwhelmingly, students requested the ability to be paid and receive class credit as an extern. The Division advocated on your behalf and made some progress.

The Division leadership drafted and submitted a formal comment requesting a change to this standard to the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar’s Standards Review Committee (SRC). Students from across the country joined the campaign by completing our survey, liking our Facebook page, and sending e-mails. I advocated our position at a SRC hearing. Following the ABA Midyear Meeting, the SRC recommended that the Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar revise the current standard to allow both credit and compensation for externs. The Section has circulated its revision for comment and will vote at the Section’s June meeting. It will then submit its overall recommendation at the ABA Annual Meeting in August. We will continue to pursue all formal means at our disposal to change the accreditation standards to law students’ benefit.

This Division also ushered in the new national circuit restructure adopted last summer at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco by the Division Assembly. Special thanks to the outgoing circuit governors who helped transition affected schools through the reorganization. While on the subject of the Division’s leadership, I had the pleasure to work with an incredible team. The Division’s Board of Governors excelled in their leadership roles and volunteerism. The Division also owes much of its success to its lieutenant governors, national student directors, and liaisons. We also welcomed new staff to the Division during this term. I have confidence in those who will take the reins in 2014-2015.

I wish the best of luck to my fellow law school graduates as we become the next generation of great facilitators. I look forward to seeing everyone at the ABA Annual Meeting this August in Boston. Onward and upward!
