New Year and New Opportunities

Vol. 42 No. 5

By

The new year is a time to focus on our goals for spring and summer. Consider using the ABA’s many resources to get an edge on your competition at school and in the workplace. You can do this by attending ABA conferences or applying for a leadership position in the Law Student Division.

The Division seeks a new generation of leaders to serve as members of its Board of Governors. Application deadlines are quickly approaching for the following positions: Chair, Vice Chair, Representative to the ABA Board of Governors, Secretary-Treasurer, Circuit Governors, and Student Editor of Student Lawyer. Information for these positions and several others can be found on the Leadership Opportunities page of the Division’s website at www.americanbar.org/groups/law_ students/about_us/leadership.html.

OnRamps is a program run by the ABA Center for Professional Development that gives law students the chance to attend ABA conferences for FREE! This is a great way to stay on the cutting edge of the legal profession and show-off the knowledge and skills gained at these conferences to employers. To attend these conferences for free, you need to volunteer to assist the conference organizers. That is a small price to pay for the chance to meet attorneys and speakers who are driving the profession you will soon enter. For more information on OnRamps go to www.americanbar.org/groups/law_students/resources/onramps.html.

Conference topics and locations include: Gaming Law held in Las Vegas, White Collar Crime held in Miami, or Health Care Law held in San Francisco. There are several more conferences this year, and all are listed at www.american bar.org/groups/law_students/resources/onramps.html.

I look forward to representing you in the ABA House of Delegates, and hope you will consider contributing your talents to our organization. There are many opportunities to hone your leadership skills while making valuable contacts in the legal profession. n
