Division Provides Assistance for First-Time Programs

Vol. 41 No. 1

Eileen M. Laux, a 3L at Florida Coastal School of Law, is student editor of Student Lawyer.

There is a first time for everything, including programs at ABA-approved law schools. The ABA Law Student Division, through the Grant Program, provides financial support to student organizations to establish first-time programs and other activities that emphasize diversity, ethics, professionalism training, law student mental health and wellness, veterans advocacy, or public interest/service activities.

Any entity or individual at an ABA-approved law school is eligible to submit an application with no limit on the number of applications that may be submitted from one school. The maximum award allowed is $500 per application and project. Schools may apply for funding to conduct programs and activities taking place between September and May of each year. Applications must be submitted a minimum of four weeks prior to the date of the project and must be a first-time program.

Secretary-treasurer Matt Gorney says he wants to make sure he is doing as much as possible when it comes to the students. Because the money for the grant program comes from the members of the Division, he says he wants to be able to meet the demands of the students.

“We want students to see the process of the grant program,” he says. “The program is operated in a manner that is above reproach.”

Upon submission, a Division committee will review all completed applications, including budgets. Preference will be given to first-time programs or projects that display a benefit to the community, law students, and the profession. Generally, notification is sent via e-mail to the appropriate contact within two weeks of receiving the application.

For more information, students should contact the Secretary-Treasurer or log on to the Division’s website to review the full list of requirements.
