Bar Exam Directory

Vol. 41 No. 3

2013 Directory of State Bar Exams

*Test dates for Arizona, Iowa, and Minnesota have been corrected since this directory printed.

About these listings

Student Lawyer collected the information in these listings from each state’s bar exam administration office. Readers interested in sitting for an exam should contact the jurisdiction to confirm dates of the July 2013 bar exam and other details.

The listings are for the July 2013 bar exam only. Most states also offer the exam in February. The deadlines for most February 2013 exams have passed, and details have not been finalized for 2014.

In some cases, law student registration is a prerequisite for applying for the bar exam. If no National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) or character report fee is noted, it often is included in the application fee. “Late fee” means a fee in addition to the regular fee is required.

Other sources of information on state bar exams are the websites of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and the NCBE.

Key

MBE Multistate Bar Examination. A 6-hour, 200-question multiple-choice exam covering contracts, torts, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, evidence, and real property.

MEE Multistate Essay Examination. In many jurisdictions, a 3-hour, 6-question essay exam that may cover business associations, conflict of laws, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, family law, federal civil procedure, real property, torts, trusts and estates, and the Uniform Commercial Code.

MPRE Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination. A 2-hour and 5-minute, 60-question multiple-choice exam administered three times each year separately from the bar exam. Most states accept scores from other jurisdictions. Applicants should contact jurisdictions for detailed and current information on passing scores, requirement exceptions, and other rules and policies.

MPT Multistate Performance Test. Two 90-minute skills questions covering legal analysis, fact analysis, problem solving, resolution of ethical dilemmas, organization and management of a lawyering task, and communication.
