The ABA and Law Student Division have long recognized that diversity is a strength. At the Annual Meeting last August, the Law Student Division was one of three entities honored with the Commission on Disability Rights’ Gold Level Honor Roll certificate for our efforts. One of our hallmark initiatives is Diversity Day, which we encourage law schools to celebrate on either Friday, March 1, or Monday, March 4. We publish a Diversity Day Toolkit, which can provide guidance as you prepare educational programs and events that teach and foster respect for others on your campus.
We are also excited to see a number of schools expand beyond Diversity Day to Diversity Week. If your school has an established commitment to diversity programming, consider applying for the Henry J. Ramsey, Jr. Diversity Award, which recognizes excellence in activities that have contributed toward the achievement and advancement of women, minorities, persons with disabilities in the profession, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. Alternatively, if you have a great idea for a new program, seek funding from the Division’s Grant Program, which provides financial support to establish first-time programs and other activities that emphasize diversity, ethics, professionalism training, mental health, or public interest/service activities.
Finally, if you self-identify as a minority or individual with a disability, seek out opportunities available through the Law Student Division. The Judicial Clerkship Program, the Diversity and Inclusion Digest, fellowships and clerkships sponsored by other entities, minority programs, and other resources available through the Law Student Division can open doors that will enhance your law school experience and career opportunities.
So while February may be the shortest month of the year, we have plenty of opportunities to make a difference. I hope you will join the Law Student Division in celebrating the diversity that makes us strong.
