Liaison Notebook: Are You Interested in Litigation and Trial Practice?

Vol. 40 No. 7

By

Brenda L. Rosales, a 3L at the University of California, Hastings College of Law, is the 2011–12 liaison to the Section of Litigation.

If you answered yes, the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation is for you. All student members of the ABA can join the Section free of cost. Upon completing law school and passing the bar, you receive a free year of Section membership as part of your ABA membership.

Why should you join the Section of Litigation? The Section is comprised of 40 different committees, ranging from Pretrial Practice and Discovery and Insurance Coverage Litigation to the Young Advocates Committee, which focuses on the needs and interests of young advocates.

When you join the Section of Litigation, you may join as many of the 40 committees as you’d like. As a committee member, you will receive access to each committee newsletter and website, as well as each committee specific event. For instance, the Woman Advocate Committee hosts brown bag lunches across the country, and as a member of that committee, you will be invited to attend these lunches and network with other members. As a Section member, you will have access to job openings via the Section’s website. Networking opportunities are also readily available as a Section member. The Section and its committees host numerous networking opportunities, CLE seminars, and meetings across the country throughout the year.

You will also immediately receive access to numerous resources for law students and young lawyers, including Sound Advice (audio recordings provided by prominent attorneys, professors, and judges on key skills ranging from how to conduct discovery and take depositions to networking, billing, and marketing), committee newsletters, and quarterly subscriptions to Litigation News and Litigation. These publications will expose you to the most up-to-date issues litigation attorneys face, and give you invaluable professional development advice.

The Section of Litigation provides you the ability to get truly involved. As a law student and young attorney, your Section membership provides you with the opportunity to publish articles in one of the Section’s many publications, serve on subcommittees, and perhaps get involved with the leadership of the Section of Litigation through various young lawyer programs. To learn more about the Section of Litigation, please visit their website. You can also “Like” the Section of Litigation on Facebook and follow it on Twitter @ABALitigation.
