Liaison Notebook

Vol. 40 No. 5

By

Francisco González, a student from DePaul University College of Law, is the 2011–12 Law Student Division liaison to the Section of Intellectual Property Law.

The Section of Intellectual Property Law (IPL) is an invaluable resource for students interested in intellectual property. As a student member of the ABA, membership in IPL is free and allows students to get involved in any of the section committees. See the Section’s website for a full list of committees.

Committees discuss current issues regarding their respective topics, help further the goals of Intellectual Property Law practice as a profession, and offer students the opportunity to learn and provide input.

At the 2011 ABA Annual Meeting, students and practicing attorneys became reporters by tweeting about the CLE programs that the Section offered during the meeting. The same program will be implemented during IPL’s 27th Annual Intellectual Property Law Conference, March 28–31, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, , . Please contact me if you will be attending the meeting and are interested in participating as a student reporter.

Such events are a great opportunity for students to network with professionals. I was able to meet with attorneys from across the country and in all different areas of IP law. During the ABA Annual Meeting in Toronto, I was able to meet the director of the USPTO, the patent and trademark commissioners, and USPTO’s general counsel. I cannot think of another organization that can provide a student with the opportunity to meet with such a spectrum of individuals.

Any student can benefit from interacting with the network of people involved in the IPL Section. Everyone I have met so far has been willing to address any questions, and the mentoring provided through these connections is something that is not available through law school. I encourage all students to become involved in this Section and any others that match their interests.
