Serve Your Community and Learn How to Prepare Taxes

Serve Your Community and Learn How to Prepare Taxes

Vol. 40 No. 6

With tax season getting into full swing, law students throughout the country are providing filing assistance and counseling to qualified people through the many Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs. Tax preparation services are provided to a variety of groups including low-income, non-English speaking, elderly, disabled, and military taxpayers.

Technical assistance, forms, and training materials are provided through the Internal Revenue Service’s VITA program. As independently managed and operated programs, ABA VITA programs allow law students to reach into their communities while receiving valuable experiences in learning how to prepare taxes.

Students at schools with VITA programs are encouraged to volunteer and become trained in tax preparation. If your school doesn’t have a VITA program, start one. Information about beginning a VITA program can be found on the Law Student Division’s website.
