Grant Program Update

Vol. 40 No. 4

Ambika Sahni is a 3L at Villanova University School of Law.

The ABA Law Student Division’s Grant Program provides ABA-approved law schools with financial support to fund a variety of new programs. The funds are distributed to promote diversity, professional development, legal ethics, public interest and pro-bono programs, and mental health awareness. Through the grant funding, the Division helps ease the burden schools, organizations, and individuals face when trying to get new events implemented.

Proposals come from law schools throughout the country and are evaluated by a committee before funds are distributed. North Carolina Central University School of Law in , recently received funding for a Speed Networking Event.

“The NCCU Speed Networking Event was a great event,” says Will Binkley, Division secretary-treasurer. “I talked with the applicant many times throughout the funding process.”

Similar to speed dating, North Carolina Central’s Speed Networking Event was a rapid-fire series of one-on-one meetings between 2Ls, 3Ls, and North Carolina Central Law alumni. Students were able to seek advice on job searches, interview techniques, and making professional connections.

The Division’s financial support also helped sponsor diversity programs. Gonzaga University School of Law was provided with funds to have an event called “Reflections on American Criminal Justice: The Story of Juan Melendez.” The event, which highlighted the role of race in jury convictions, discussed the story of Juan Melendez, a man on death row for 18 years before being exonerated.

The University of Oklahoma College of Law also received funds from the Division to organize an event that addressed the accuracy of the Obama administration’s decision to use military commissions. The event featured JAG officers as presenters.

Applications and proposals may be submitted by e-mail to the Chicago office and Binkley. All requirements and the application can be found on the Division’s website.
