Explore Emerging Career Options at the Homeland Security Law Institute

Vol. 39 No. 6

Ten years ago, the 9/11 terrorist attacks reshaped American life. In 2005, the ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice founded the Homeland Security Law Institute (HSLI), a two-day event bringing together a variety of homeland security lawyers. Over the first five years, HLSI has grown to include 90 speakers and 350 attendees, representing federal, state, and local governments (40 percent), private corporations (30 percent), and private law firms (30 percent). Past speakers have included U.S. Department of Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge, Oklahoma governor Frank Keating, New York Police Department commissioner Raymond Kelly, and other senior cabinet agency officials.

This year, chair Joe D. Whitley, the former first General Counsel at the Department of Homeland Security, has organized the 6th Annual HLSI to be held at the Capital Hilton in , on March 2–3, 2011. This year’s topics include cybersecurity, technology in Homeland Security (SAFETY Act), Immigration, State and Local Government Preparedness, Financial Security, Chemical Security, and the Role of Courts in Terrorism, among many others.

Students can attend all Admin Law Section CLE sessions for free. Meeting information is available at the ABA HLSI website (www2.americanbar.org/calendar/6th-annual-homeland-security-law-institute/Pages/default.aspx).

In addition, Homeland Security: Legal and Policy Issues by Joe D. Whitley and Lynne K. Zussman––an invaluable resource for students interested in Homeland Security careers––is available through the ABA Bookstore.

Homeland Security is one of the many exciting high growth career opportunities in Administrative Law.

Rich Raiders, a third-year evening student at of Law, is the 2010–11 Law Student Division liaison to the Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice.
