Chair's Bulletin

The August 2005 issue of the Chair's Bulletin is now available on the Section website. The printed version is on its way to members' mailboxes.

The Section Needs Your Involvement - Please Join a Committee!

As you may know, the Section is the largest and most influential organization of intellectual property lawyers in the world. We are seeking volunteers who are interested in actively participating in the Section's committee work for the next year. We have dramatically revised our Committee and Division structure and now ask for you to review the listing to make your selection. Even if you have been on the same committee for several years, please be sure to check and see that your committee will still be active.

Committee work in the Section is the foundation of our productive efforts. Our committees actively write, critique and comment on current and proposed policies, laws, rules and cases relating to intellectual property, plan CLE programs, and much more. Committee work usually is the basis on which the Section Council and membership take action in Congress, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Copyright Office, other agencies and the courts. The work of our committees makes a difference in advancing our profession. Active participation in committee work is professionally rewarding and educational, and provides an opportunity for members to interact with colleagues and leaders in the intellectual property bar.

Please help shape the future of intellectual property law. Review the complete listing of Divisions at www.abanet.org/
intelprop/ committees.html
. Then click through to the individual committee you want to join and sign up online.

Committee work will begin in September, so be sure to sign up now. We look forward to working with you to keep our Section as a leader of IP issues.

The ABA to Help Hurricane Victims

As the eyes of the nation remain focused on the hurricane-ravaged southeastern United States, especially Mississippi and Louisiana, the American Bar Association stands ready to assist those injured by Hurricane Katrina.

ABA President Michael S. Greco has announced that he is enlisting the ABA Young Lawyers Division and lawyers from several ABA sections to assist hurricane victims in the coming days and weeks. The lawyers will assist with insurance claims, home repair contracts, wills and other documents, and related issues.

The ABA has provided pro bono assistance to storm victims since 1978, when the ABA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to utilize the ABA Young Lawyers Division in staffing a toll-free hotline open to disaster victims.

FEMA is now in the process of establishing a hotline staffed by ABA volunteer lawyers to assist victims in each affected state. A complete listing of the FEMA hotlines and other available legal resources will be posted on the ABA website, www.abanet.org, in the coming days. Stay tuned to the ABA website for ways you can help the victims as well.

Anthony Figg recently appointed, welcomes suggestions of members for nominees for the offices of Chair-Elect, Vice Chair, Secretary, Financial Officer, Section Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates and four new members of Council for four-year terms expiring in 2010. Under the Section Bylaws, Susan Barbieri Montgomery, current Chair-Elect, will automatically assume the office of Section Chair on September 1, 2006.

The nominees will be voted on at the Section’s business meeting, Saturday, August 5, 2006, during the ABA Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Section Leadership Meeting Moved to Fall

The Section Leadership Meeting will now be held in the fall instead of the winter. This year's meeting will take place November 12-14 at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Bonita Springs, FL.

Section Officers, Council Members, and Division and Committee Chairs will converge to share their respective plans with one another. It provides an opportunity for all members of the Section leadership to get to know each other better, learn about the status of projects throughout the Section, and get comments and constructive criticism from others.
