Understanding an Architect’s Rights in a Virtual Future

Vol. 9, No. 2

Deanna M. Adams is Vice Chair of the ABA Section of Science and Technology Law’s Virtual Worlds and Multi-User Online Games Committee.

Imagine a world where you can be whomever—or whatever—you desire; a world where you are free of inhibitions; a world where you can do anything that you want. For dreamers worldwide, such an imaginary world exists within virtual worlds. Virtual worlds are computer-based online communities where users interact with one another by taking on the form of avatars. Although virtual worlds vary by objective, many users take up residence within the online communities in order to engage in pseudo-real-world activities. For those seeking to engage in in-world activities that require geographic realism through the re-creation of real-world buildings within virtual communities, both creator and user-generated content can raise copyright law implications.
