Don’t Miss This Opportunity!

Join Us in San Francisco September 15–17

The ABA Sections of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law and Taxation will once again co-sponsor a Fall CLE Meeting from September 15–17 at the Park Hyatt and Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, California.

This is the third year we have decided to combine our CLE offerings with those of the Section of Taxation. Last year’s meeting in Boston was a big success, and we are looking forward to this year’s meeting as well.

This meeting presents many opportunities for you to experience CLE that is beneficial to Section members who share many common legal interests. Join us and take advantage of networking with the country’s leading attorneys and government officials to discuss the latest initiatives, regulations, legislative forecasts, and planning ideas.

The meeting will include stand-alone real property and probate and trust law CLE as well as joint programming with the Section of Taxation.

Watch for details at www.abanet.org/rppt/2005.

Join a Section Committee

If you are a member of the Section and do not belong to a group and/or committee, you are not taking full advantage of the opportunities afforded by the Section! Group membership is free of charge to all Section members. Once you sign up for a group, you may wish to then sign up for more specific subject matter committees within the group. These smaller committees are working bodies, while the larger groups accept members on an informational basis. The Section has over 100 committees involving over 3,000 Section members. A Section Group and a Section Committee are highlighted below.

The Section encourages members who wish to participate actively in a group to contact the Section office at (312) 988–5651 for further information on group membership. For the complete Guide to Committees, including group and committee descriptions, please visit our web site at www.abanet.org/rppt .

Real Property Division—Mortgage Lending Committee

This committee focuses on all aspects of construction and permanent lending for commercial, multi-family, and industrial loans, including disbursement practices, avoidance of mechanics’ liens, priority for future advances, and the lender’s rights in construction documents and related rights such as building permits, architectural plans, and specifications and the like, as well as take-out commitments and permanent mortgage loan structuring. This committee addresses the evolving nature of the documentation of loan transactions.

Materials from programs the committee has presented are posted on its web page. Learn more about all of the committee’s activities at www.abanet.org/rppt/cmtes/rp/i1/home.html.

Probate and Trust Division—Business Planning Group

The Business Planning Group of committees covers choice of entity, estate planning, and estate administration for clients who own business entities or interests in farms or ranches. The entities may be active businesses or formed to hold investments. Entities include partnerships (general, limited, and/or limited liability), limited liability companies, and corporations (including those with an “S” election in place).

The group web page features many resources, including summaries of recent cases. You can learn more about the Business Planning Group at www.abanet.org/rppt/cmtes/pt/c-group/home.html.
