Along with hydraulic fracturing, shale oil, tar sands, and other emerging North American energy production issues, one new trend that has remained just below the radar is the export of energy commodities from the United States. For the public, energy production from new fields is the most logical step in achieving the much-hyped state of American “energy independence.” The issue is much more complicated for the energy industry than supply and demand. For American energy market regulators, such as the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of State, many decisions pertaining to our energy trade balance are determined by statute.
