NEWS FROM THE LAW PRACTICE MANAGEMENT SECTION

After taking advantage of the summer vacation season, law firms and the association are now “back to school.” The return to a busy client schedule coincides with the beginning of a new ABA and LPM Section year and enthusiastic new leadership of LPM’s boards and committees.

Section leaders are particularly excited about welcoming an influx of new leaders from the ABA Young Lawyers Division, and are looking forward to more broadly reaching lawyers of all ages. Help us remain of the utmost relevance to you and the challenges of your practice—your input and feedback are welcome.

Fall sunshine in St. Maarten. As the weather turns chilly in the U.S. and Canada, October is a perfect time to join LPM for the 2009 Fall Meeting in the Caribbean, at the Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort. This beautiful setting will play host to a special guest speaker, networking events and the Section’s planning boards and committees, which are welcoming numerous new active members. The location was selected prior to the economic downturn, but because of reduced demand for travel, ABA has negotiated very favorable rates for members attending the meeting. Register and make your travel plans now, because the hotel reservation deadline is September 14 (special rates are not guaranteed after this date). Information about the meeting, including registration and travel details, is available at www.lawpractice.org/fallmeeting.

Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference: Differentiate! Registration continues for the biannual ABA Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference, a comprehensive two-day event for lawyers, marketing professionals and executives. Join LPM in Philadelphia November 12-13 for this valuable conference, featuring two prominent keynote speakers and programs on the most current topics in firm marketing—ethical issues surrounding law firm marketing, media strategies, the effective use of online marketing and more. There are also programs designed for large and small firms on public relations and technology topics. For complete conference details, including group rates at the Four Seasons Philadelphia, visit www.lawpractice.org/marketingconference.

More convenient CLE options. LPM’s popular “Third Thursday” CLE teleconferences continue this fall with a continuing emphasis on the core areas of the business of practicing law: marketing management, technology and finance. See Events below, and mark your calendar now for the fall dates.

Members receive substantial discounts on LPM’s monthly teleconferences. Registration information is available at www.lawpractice.org/cle.

Avoid service interruptions and renew today! All members should have received a membership renewal notice this summer for the 2009-2010 ABA year. (The membership period runs from September through August.) LPM Section dues remain very affordable at only $50 per year, for which members receive a wide array of benefits, including valuable subscriptions and substantial discounts on Section programs and resources. To avoid missing any issues of Law Practice magazine, Law Practice Today webzine or other Section benefits, please take a moment now to complete your membership renewal, either by mail or by logging in at www.abanet.org. (Simply click the Login and Welcome links at the top of the page.)

Did you know? Section meetings. How does the Section choose sites for its meetings? LPM ordinarily schedules meetings during the ABA Annual (summer) and Midyear (winter) Meetings, working closely with other ABA Sections and departments on joint programming. In addition, the Section schedules its other quarterly meetings (fall and spring) in a variety of locations to reach our broad membership. LPM benefits from ABA’s influence in the travel industry, because of the large number of meetings ABA schedules, and this allows us to secure favorable rates for space and rooms well in advance of meetings.
