After nearly 20 years as a practicing lawyer, and more than 10 years managing a law firm, I still find myself anxiously awaiting each new chance to connect with my colleagues in the ABA Law Practice Management Section. Whether it be reading Law Practice magazine, reviewing one of LPM’s many books or attending an LPM program, after all this time I remain a student thankful for the opportunity to learn from my peers.
As I begin my year as Law Practice Management Section Chair, I can’t help but feel excited about the great team that we have assembled to continue the tradition of providing premier practice management content for the members of the legal profession. These are people with a real passion for service in each of LPM’s core areas—marketing, management, technology and finance. Every one of them is committed to sharing his or her experience through our network of accomplished volunteers. (Turn to page 16 of this issue for a directory of this year’s leaders.)
In the coming year, we’ll continue to provide our world-class programs, beginning in October with the ABA Women Rainmakers Mid-Career Workshop in Tucson. Next April, we’ll celebrate our 23rd year of ABA -TECHSHOW® in Chicago, with more than 60 hours of technology programming over three days. Also be sure to look for our Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference, set for November 2009 in Philadelphia.
And don’t be surprised if you see us in your local community, as we take more of our programming on the road. Plans are in place to provide educational sessions in each of our core areas at a joint meeting with the ABA Young Lawyers Division in New Orleans in May 2009, and we hope to follow up our successful Law Firm Management Roundtable, conducted in New York this past August. We’re also -looking at a number of requests to bring some of our programming to state or local bar associations.
Our goals for the year include reaching out to those not yet taking full advantage of all the things that LPM has to offer. To do this, we’ll build on our existing programs, and redouble our efforts to bring our content to our audience. Expect to see more new books, providing in-depth information on topics in each of LPM’s core areas. Monthly telephone seminars will make content more accessible through distance learning, and we will continue to grow Law Practice Today , our monthly -webzine, available free of charge to everyone with an interest in the practice of law.
Still, for me, nothing compares to the information and experience available by getting involved directly in the development and delivery of content. By participating, I’ve been able to see the issues facing my colleagues firsthand, and to offer my perspective in developing solutions to the problems. I’ve also been given access to some of the leading authorities in dealing with practice management issues and, more than once, have taken advantage of their expertise.
As a member of the LPM Section, these opportunities are available to you, too, and I encourage each of you to make the most of them.
