Backup to Backup: Disaster Recovery Planning

Featuring the best pointers from ABA TECHSHOW® in snippets of sage advice from past presentations.

Every March, thousands flock to ABA TECHSHOW to hear top legal technology experts present on all the hot topics. In “Tidbit” we feature a snippet of sage advice from a presentation, and then post the complete paper on the ABA TECHSHOW website.

PRESENTERS: Laura Calloway and Toby Brown

As many a law practice learned in Hurricane Katrina, even those that diligently make backup tapes and store them in offsite facilities can lose all their data. Suddenly, online backup sites don’t seem so scary, eh? In fact, they might be just the ticket to keep your data safe and available for restoration, at anytime from anywhere, even in the event of a regional disaster.

When considering one of these services, do your homework and ask about the following:

  • Company Background: How long has the service been in business? How many employees does it have, and are they bonded? What happens to customers’ data if the company goes out of business?
  • Security: Is data encrypted before Internet transmission? When it is stored? Who has access to it? What physical security and redundancy measures are implemented?
  • Functionality: Will the system work with your existing hardware and software? What is backed up? How long does it take? What is the process for restoring data?
  • Pricing: What are the storage costs? Can you easily upsize or downsize to meet changing needs? If you exceed your selected storage amount, how much will additional space cost?
