News from the Law Practice Management Section

By Larry Smith

This fall is an exciting time of growth for the LPM Section. More members than ever are becoming actively involved in our programs and activities. Not only have we seen increased registration for the LPM Fall Meeting in Vancouver, but thousands of members are joining the four LPM Core Groups, which focus on marketing, management, technology and finance. In addition, as LPM launches a new technology-focused Webzine, members and subscribers will have even more opportunities to hone their practice management skills.

Law Technology Today Webzine. The popularity of the Section’s monthly Webzine Law Practice Today—especially the attention garnered by its coverage of law office technology and litigation technology issues—has driven demand for a new technology-focused Webzine. Law Technology Today launches this fall and will be distributed free to all members and opt-in subscribers.

Professional Legal Management Week. Each year, LPM partners with other legal services organizations to present Professional Legal Management Week (PLMW), to be held October 2-6 this year. PLMW celebrates the role that management and administrative professionals play in the success of the law office. In connection with PLMW, on October 3 LPM will present a joint Webinar with the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), titled Bridging the Gap: Strengthening Communication Among Attorneys and Law Firm Management. For details, please visit www.lawpractice.org.

ABA TECHSHOW® . Registration for the next ABA TECHSHOW, the world’s premier legal technology conference and expo, opens in October. ABA TECHSHOW 2007 will be held March 22-24, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. The three-day conference, which is attended by more than 2,000 people each year, offers more than 50 legal technology programs and training sessions. The two-day expo features more than 100 legal technology vendors. Attend in 2007, and you’ll discover why ABA TECHSHOW has become the world’s leading legal technology conference. LPM members are entitled to a substantial discount on registration fees. To learn more and to register, visit www.techshow.com.

Convenient CLE Teleconferences. LPM’s monthly CLE teleconference series (60- to 90-minute audio seminars) is a convenient way to expand your knowledge from the comfort of your office chair—today’s practical and affordable way to earn CLE credits. October 19th’s teleconference, e-Learning for Law Firms, examines how law firms are using e-learning to enhance professional development programs, including e-learning’s impact on continuing legal education and other applications in law firms. The program will also define the technologies and approaches used to support e-learning. In a November teleconference, The Successful Lawyer: Powerful Strategies for Transforming Your Practice , firm management expert Gerry Riskin will provide insight into effectively managing client relationships as well as the business side of practice. His book by the same name has been one of ABA’s most popular titles this past year. LPM members receive substantial discounts on registration fees. Visit www.lawpractice.org /cle for details and to register online.

ABA Women Rainmakers . The LPM Section’s ABA Women Rainmakers (www.womenrainmakers.org) is a forum that enables women lawyers to network and develop business opportunities. ABA Women Rainmakers educates professional women about marketing and business development, offers mentoring and networking opportunities to build personal and professional relationships, and provides programs throughout the year. The group is open to lawyers and non-lawyers, and membership to ABA Women Rainmakers is free for LPM members.
