Welcome to a new Association year! After a busy summer, September signals “back to school” time (literally, for our law student members), a time when many renew their focus on practice management.

September also means that an updated Section leadership slate takes the helm in serving LPM members. (See the latest LPM Leadership Directory on page 54.) With even more active members joining the Section this summer, LPM remains your best source for information and resources on the business of practicing law.

Join a Practice Core Group. This summer, incoming Section Chair Tom Grella invited all LPM members to join one of the LPM Practice Core Groups —focusing on marketing, management, technology and finance—to make the most of your membership. Practice Core Group members will have the opportunity to participate in online discussion groups and in-person and virtual meetings to influence future LPM CLE programs, articles and books. For members who have not yet done so, LPM will assign a Core Group membership based on the areas of interest you have specified in your ABA profile. You can change your preferences at any time by visiting www.abanet.org/survey.

Meet LPM in Vancouver. If you missed catching up with colleagues and earning CLE credits at the ABA Annual Meeting in Honolulu, join us October 12-14 for the LPM Section Fall Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Section will host its meetings in conjunction with the annual Pacific Legal Technology Conference. (Separate registration is required.) As always, LPM will host its popular networking receptions, along with a special first-time-attendees breakfast on Thursday and an exciting evening dinner event on Saturday. LPM meetings will include Practice Core Groups, committees, and the LPM Publishing, Periodicals and Education Boards. For complete information and to register, visit www.lawpractice.org/fallmeeting/. The advance registration

deadline is September 29, 2006.

More CLE at your desk! LPM continues its popular monthly CLE teleconference series. These 60- to 90-minute audio seminars allow you to expand your knowledge from the comfort of your office chair—a practical and affordable way to earn CLE credits.

On Thursday, September 21, ABA Women Rainmakers will present Negotiating Difference: Appreciating Gender and Culture in Negotiation. This highly interactive program will focus on how communication styles, cultural mores and social perceptions affect negotiation success, particularly in a multicultural environment, and how women can use these factors to their advantage. A panel of successful lawyers will discuss and compare notes on negotiating through “difference”—real, perceived and ignored—confronting and overcoming the obstacles posed by “difference,” and developing strategies for negotiation success. LPM members receive substantial discounts on registration fees. Visit www.lawpractice.org/cle for complete details and to register.
