AIDS Coordinating Committee Announces Initiatives for 2006

The ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee and AIDS Coordination Project (housed in the Section) recently announced three exciting initiatives for 2006.

HIV/AIDS Law & Practice Conference

Registration is now open for the next national ABA HIV/AIDS Law & Practice Conference, set for May 19-20, 2006, at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower in Portland, Oregon.  Local and national experts will lead interactive sessions addressing cutting-edge issues in Public Policy Advocacy; Social Security Practice; Litigation Strategies; Government and Private Insurance; HIV Discrimination in the Health Care Sector; Children, Adolescents, and Foster Care; the Future of HIV Legal Services; and other topics.  Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit will be available.  This year’s conference is co-sponsored by the ABA Young Lawyers Division as part of its 2005-06 National Public Service Project To register for the conference, visit the AIDS Coordination Project website at: www.abanet.org/AIDS.

ABA Young Lawyers Division National Public Service Project on HIV/AIDS

Every bar year, the ABA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) institutes a national public service project to engage young lawyers in public service nationwide.  This year’s project, Answering the Call, focuses on enhancing the delivery of legal services to people living with HIV/AIDS.  Developed with assistance from the ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee, the project features an

educational component, including programming at national conferences and a series of publications, to raise awareness of the many legal issues engendered by HIV/AIDS.  It also includes a “hands-on” component that promotes efforts by state and local bar affiliates and individual young lawyers to reach out to the HIV/AIDS community, both in connection with legal representation and in broader ways.  The project’s essential mission is to elevate lawyers’ understanding of HIV/AIDS and, based on that understanding, improve the scope of legal services available to people living with the disease.  For more information, visit: http://www.abanet.org/yld/publicservice.html

HIV/AIDS Policy & Law Review

Beginning this year, the ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee and the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network will join forces on the Network’s HIV/AIDS Policy & Law Review (formerly the Canadian HIV/AIDS Policy & Law Review).  Praised by advocates, policymakers, and researchers as a “journal of record” for AIDS-related legal news, information, and ideas, the Review is distributed widely to community-based organizations, legal professionals/organizations, and government policymakers in Canada and internationally.  Its ABA affiliation will give the Review extended reach to the continental U.S.; a diverse and accomplished editorial board; and peer-review capability for articles submitted for publication.  For more information, visit: http://www.aidslaw.ca/Maincontent/otherdocs/Newsletter/newsletter.htm
