New AIDS Committee Chair Appointed
President Karen J. Mathis has appointed Shelley D. Hayes of Washington, D.C., Chair to the ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee, which is housed in the Section. Hayes succeeds the Hon. Richard T. Andrias of New York who completed his three-year term as Chair in August.
The Committee was established in 1987 to analyze and address the myriad legal issues engendered by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Hayes, who also serves on the Section’s Council, has been a member of the Committee since 1988 and served as Vice Chair the last three years. Her ambitious agenda as Chair includes expansion of legal services for people with HIV/AIDS domestically and internationally.
"Who knew, when Judge Andrias and I joined the Committee almost 20 years ago, there would be so much work left to be done? I’m honored to follow Judge Andrias and to continue the important projects initiated on his watch. It will be a busy year in which we hope to launch a nationwide program to encourage and train lawyers to work with healthcare providers in counseling persons newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS."
