At the Fall 2005 Council meeting, the Section Council will hold a special election to make interim appointments to fill three new Council positions. The Section Council will appoint two section members to fill its new minority-at-large seats that were approved by the ABA Board of Governors in June 2005, and adopted as part of the Section’s amended bylaws in August. The Council also will appoint a second delegate to the ABA House of Delegates, as approved by an amendment to the ABA Constitution during the 2005 Annual Meeting.
Under Article III of the Section's bylaws, when a Section officer or Council member vacancy occurs, the Council may make an interim appointment until a successor is elected at the next Annual Meeting. Should the Council fail to make an interim appointment, the position(s) shall remain vacant until the next Annual Meeting.
Given the importance of the new leadership positions, the Council will make interim appointments in October. All Council members and Delegates must be members of the ABA and the Section. Past service to the Section, through committees or otherwise, or having done significant work outside of the Section that will add to the Section’s work and credibility will also be factors in the appointments. The special election will take place during the Section’s fall Council Meeting on Friday, Oct. 28, at 1:00 p.m. at the ABA offices in Washington D.C.
