On 2/5/08, the Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services, announced the final rule changes to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program required by the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA). The DRA reauthorized the TANF program through fiscal year 2010 with a renewed focus on work, program integrity, and strengthening families through healthy marriage promotion and responsible fatherhood. The Senate, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing on ways to address healthcare workforce issues for the future. 2/12/08, 10 am, 430 Dirksen.

On 2/4/08, the Senate resumed consideration of S 2248, to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, to modernize and streamline the provisions of that Act. On 2/4/08, ABA Governmental Affairs Acting Director Denise A. Cardman sent a letter to members of the 110 th Senate supporting a bipartisan amendment to reiterate that FISA is the exclusive means for conducting electronic surveillance for foreign intelligence purposes.
On 1/31/08 the president signed H.R. 5104 [Public Law 110–182], to extend the Protect America Act of 2007 for 15 days.
