On 9/25/06, the House Committee on Rules granted by voice vote a closed rule providing one hour of debate in the House on S 403, to amend Title 18, United States Code, to prohibit taking minors across state lines in circumvention of laws requiring the involvement of parents in abortion decisions.

On 9/25/06, the Senate agreed to S Res 582, urging the people of the United States to observe Global Family Day and One Day of Peace and Sharing.

Presidential Action

On 9/22/06, the President signed into law S 3534 (P.L. 109-281), to amend the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 to provide for a YouthBuild program.

Committee Action

On 9/25/06, the House Committee on Rules granted by voice vote a closed rule providing one hour of debate in the House on HR 2679, to amend the Revised Statutes of the United States to eliminate the chilling effect on the constitutionally protected expression of religion by state and local officials that results from the threat that potential litigants may seek damages and attorney’s fees.

Hearings

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a confirmation hearing on pending judicial nominations: Michael Brunson Wallace, of Mississippi, to be U.S. Circuit Judge for the 5th Circuit; and Vanessa Lynne Bryant, to be U.S. District Judge for the District of Connecticut. On 9/25/06, the Senate agreed to S Res 584, to authorize the production of records, testimony, and legal representation.

On 9/25/06, the Senate confirmed, by unanimous vote of 87 yeas, the nomination of Francisco Augusto Besosa, of Puerto Rico, to be United States District Judge for the District of Puerto Rico.

On 9/25/06, the House passed HR 5454, to authorize salary adjustments for justices and judges of the United States for the fiscal year 2007.
