Message From the Chair

Vol. 15, No. 3

Forum Chair

As we reach the lazy days of summer and many are off on family vacations, the Forum is alive with activity. Notably, Leslie Curran and Mike Joblove, the Co-Program Chairs for the October Forum to be held at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, continue to work hard to ensure that the Annual Meeting will be a success. The speakers are also hard at work completing the final drafts of their papers for the Meeting. Leslie and Mike have done an excellent job under unique circumstances and continue to expend the time and effort that will make this Forum truly remarkable.

Speaking of remarkable, I would be remiss if I failed to note the expiration of Harris Chernow’s term on the Forum’s Governing Committee. For those of you who do not know Harris, he has served the Forum in various capacities for a number of years, initially as the director of LADR, then as the Co-Program Chair for the Arizona Forum (which he continues to remind me was the most highly attended Forum), and most recently as the Forum’s Finance Officer. Notwithstanding wearing all of these different hats over the years, Harris has continued to mentor lawyers new to the Forum. He has been an integral part of the success of the Forum and his Forum contributions will survive long after his term ends in August. Harris, on behalf of the Forum’s membership, thank you for all of your hard work and effort over the last 10 or so years.

I would also like to recognize the contributions of John Pratt, Brian Balconi and Chris Bussert. John’s term as the chair of the Forum’s International Franchise and Distribution Division will end in August and so will Brian’s term as the chair of the Forum’s Corporate Counsel Division. Both have been instrumental in the success of their respective Divisions and I thank them for their service. Likewise, Chris’ tenure as the Editor-in-Chief of the Franchise Law Journal ends in August. Chris has done a remarkable job ensuring that the Franchise Law Journal continues to be one of the most highly-valued components of Forum membership, for which we are all grateful.

As some Forum leaders complete their terms, a new crop of leaders have recently been nominated for positions on the Governing Committee. The Nominating Committee, which was led by Ron Gardner, and included Jamila Granger, Peter Klarfeld, Rebekah Prince and Dennis Wieczorek, was faced with some incredibly difficult decisions based upon the outstanding credentials of those nominated for positions in Forum leadership. After a significant amount of time and effort, the Nominating Committee unanimously nominated Deb Coldwell for election as my successor, and Chris Bussert, Leslie Curran, Diane Green-Kelly, Andrew Loewinger, and David Oppenheim, for election to the Governing Committee. Each of these individuals is deserving of their nomination and I have no doubt will serve the Forum well in the future.

As many of you know, the Forum has a tradition of giving certain awards at the Annual Meeting in October. If you would like to nominate a Forum member for the Lew Rudnick Award, the Chair’s Award for Substantial Written Work or Presentation, the Chair’s Future Leader Award or the Chair’s Explorers Award, please send me an email with the name of the nominee and why you believe they should receive the Award. Nominations must be received by September 1, 2012. If you would like more information on the criteria for these awards please visit the Forum’s website at http://www.americanbar.org/groups/franchising/news_announcements.html.

I began this Message by highlighting the work of Leslie Curran, Mike Joblove and the Forum speakers who are getting ready for the upcoming Forum. Considering the venue, the presentation topics and the events, including the signature social events to be held at the historic Belasco Theater and the Grammy Museum, there may be no other Forum that I have looked forward to more than this one. Remember, to take advantage of the early bird registration, you need to register before August, 1 2012. The registration brochure can be found at http://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/events/franchising/fran12_brochure.authcheckdam.pdf. Sign up now, get a break on the price and guaranty that you will not miss out on everything this event promises to offer. What more could you ask for??!!
