Clark Street 19th Floor Chicago, IL 60654 www.abanet.org/lsd/ | | Message from the Law Student Division ChairHelp Us Lobby Congress to Support Student Loan ReformDear Fellow ABA Law Student Member: One of the most important roles of the American Bar Association (ABA) Law Student Division is to advocate on behalf of law students, including advocating law student issues to Congress. Specifically, the ABA has focused its efforts on two primary issues: 1) increasing Stafford loan limits and 2) incorporating bar exam study loans under the definition of an education loan. The mandate to advocate for these issues comes from policy created by the ABA Commission on the Impact of the Economic Crisis on the Profession and Legal Needs and subsequently endorsed by the ABA House of Delegates. The U.S. Senate is currently considering legislation on student loan reform that will likely be attached to the budget reconciliation process (meaning only 51 votes are needed instead of 60) and they hope to complete this process before they adjourn for recess - no later than March 26, 2010. We need your help to lobby Senate leaders on these issues. Please make a phone call or send an email or fax a letter (in early to mid-March) directly to your Senator's office to let him or her know that you support these initiatives. Click here for a sample letter you can use that outlines the two initiatives. If you need assistance tracking down the contact information for your senators, click here. In advance, thank you for being part of our unified national force of 43,000 members. We will continue to amplify our advocacy with future lobbying efforts and coordinated grassroots efforts by our members. Your service at such busy times in our lives to help future law students and to create equal access to education is a credit to the future of our profession. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
