My legal practice was punctuated by a dozen years in academia from 1995 to 2007.  As a law professor, I embraced PowerPoint, recorded some podcast lectures and patted myself on the back for keeping up with the times.  When I returned to practice in 2007, I thought I knew what I was in for. 

I was wrong.  The lawyer’s toolbox has changed dramatically over the past twenty-odd years and continues to evolve at a furious pace.  My evidence?  In 1989, the tools on my desk included a pen, a legal pad and a telephone.  When I rejoined private practice in 2007, my desk held a hard drive, monitor, mouse, keyboard, landline telephone, blackberry, remote access security key and a schedule of required e-training sessions. 

Today we are all virtual lawyers with instant access to technology designed to enhance client service.  But as any student in shop class can tell you, a tool is only as good as the hand that wields it.  In careless hands, even the best technology may shatter the security of the data entrusted to our care. 

These new and promising technologies are the reason I joined the LPM Section.  The Section has been my 21st century shop class--a place to learn about new tools and how best to use them.  Join me as a student in the LPM’s shop class for virtual lawyers.  We’ll learn the best way to use our new tools--and you won’t even have to wear your safety goggles!
