Keith Richards has opined, “To make a rock ‘n’ roll record, technology is the least important thing.” In the business of law practice, though, nothing could be more important.
On January 1, 2010, after serving as a partner at a larger law firm, I realized the dream of starting my own law firm. Hyde Law Firm, P.A. --which focuses on family law, personal injury, and real estate--has grown steadily since that time in great part because of technology.
Technology levels the playing field for small law firms in two ways. First, you can compete in the marketing game without having a big-firm budget. Thoughtful approaches to websites, blogs, and social media can create a strong presence. Second, list-serves and other electronic forums offer small-firm practitioners the benefit of big-firm fellowship and shared perspective.
It is critical, therefore, to stay on the cutting edge of legal technology. I have found no better way to do this than by being a member of the ABA Law Practice Management Section (LPM). LPM’s publications and platforms help me select office equipment, navigate the Web, and interact with colleagues. LPM has become my law partner!
