GENERAL PRACTICE, SOLO AND SMALL FIRM
Highlights from the Division’s Website

By Alexa Giacomini

If you haven’t been to the Division’s website recently, you may be surprised by the wealth of information and resources made available to you. Located at www.abanet.org/genpractice, the GP|Solo website is your portal for discovering all the Division has to offer you as a member.

The home page not only lists information about current activities such as upcoming meeting deadlines, awards application deadlines, and new book releases, but also provides members with the option of entering a more targeted welcome page based on practice setting. Because of the Division’s large numbers of, and commitment to, law students, young lawyers, military lawyers, and lawyers of diversity, the Division has developed special resource pages for lawyers in these categories to help them more efficiently find information related to their interests. For instance, a lawyer of diversity can click on the “Diversity” welcome page to find more information about the Division’s Diversity Fellowship Program, how the Division rated in the ABA’s Goal IX survey, and special speaking opportunities.

For solos, the Division develops and maintains a solo-interest web page, Solosez.net », an offshoot of the successful Solosez listserve. On this page solos can find out more information about the Solosez listserve, including past thread topics and planned meetings across the nation, as well as links and resources related to practice management, professional issues, small business, and more.

Looking for an article that ran in a past issue of GPSolo magazine? No problem. Just visit the GPSOLO magazine online », and search all of the past issues (1995-present) by topic or keyword. For those of you interested in getting published, you also can consult the magazine’s author guidelines.

Curious to see what CLE opportunities are available to you through the Division? On the Division’s CLE page » you can look at the Division’s upcoming schedule of CLE teleconferences, Division programs available on West LegalEdCenter (don’t forget your special Division discount!), and live CLE programs to be held at upcoming meetings. You also can download, for free, past CLE program materials such as all 25 hours’ worth of CLE programming held at the Division’s 2006 National Solo and Small Firm Conference.

For those of you active in your state or local bar leadership, you may enjoy visiting the Division’s “State and Local Bars” page » under the “Resources” section. Here you can find information about various practice management advisor programs, links to other state bars’ solo, small firm, and/or general practice programs, and information on the Division’s Bar Project and Bar Leader Awards.

If you’re like me, you’ve joined up for memberships in the past and then forgotten what all you’re entitled to receive with that membership. You may realize that you have not taken full advantage of all the benefits you get with your membership, such as signing up for three free substantive law committees.
