Section News At-Large Council Vacancy Filled
Congratulations to Jonathan Wolfe, who has been chosen to fill the At-Large Council seat vacated by Greg Ortiz when he was elected Financial Officer of the Section.
Wolfe will remain on Council until his term expires August 31, 2011.

Leadership Nominations Now Being Accepted
Looking for new ways to become more vested in the ABA Section of Family Law or the practice of family law in general? Apply for a leadership position for the 2011-2012 Section year!
The Nominating Committee is chaired by Chair-Elect Randall Kessler, Atlanta, GA. Members include: Gerald (Jay) Babbitt, Columbus, OH; Gregg Herman, Milwaukee, WI; Anne Marie Jackson, Washington, D.C., and Mary Vidas, Philadelphia, PA.
The committee seeks nominations for the following positions:
Chair-elect (one-year term)
Vice Chair (one-year term)
Secretary (one-year term)
Section Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates (three-year term)
At-Large Council Representatives (three positions; three-year terms)
Region III Representative (three-year term) composed of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois.
Region V Representative (three-year term) composed of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas.
To be considered for nomination, submit a letter of interest by November 1, 2010. Send your letter via e-mail with Word attachment to Section Director Paula Nessel, Paula.Nessel@americanbar.org and Chair-elect Randall Kessler, rkessler@kssfamilylaw.com.

Military Custody and Federal Law

Did you even think that Congress would one day be deciding your client's custody right? Well, that day might be just around the corner if Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio has his way. His proposal regarding military custody issues, H.R. 4469, has passed the House of Representatives for three years in a row. If it makes it through the Senate, it'll be law in 2011.
Family law practitioners may not be fully familiar with the proposed federal child custody legislation. So we've asked Mark Sullivan, a widely known expert in military divorce law who has testified in Congress and before state legislatures on military custody, to answer some questions about the ramifications of having a federal statute on child custody.

Tech Corner Old and New Google Search Tricks
In early September, Google launched a major revision to their classic search tool: Google Instant. With this new version of Google, you no longer need to click the "Google Search" button to see your results. Instead, Google begins to return results even as you type your query into the search box.
Google estimates that this feature saves 3-5 seconds per search, which can certainly add up over the course of a long day (or week) of research. It may also help you craft better search queries, as you get instantaneous feedback as you begin to craft the search string. What do you do if you find the instant search isn't to your liking? Simply visit your Google preferences to disable the feature.
While Google's new instant search obviously returns traditional web search results, it also works with many of Google's lesser known features. Here's a sampling of some of the most useful Google features you can access directly from Google's search bar:
* Track flight status

* Check the weather forecast

* Quickly convert measurements
Ex. ¾ cup in tablespoons
* Look up stock prices

New ABA List Portal
Manage all of your discussion lists, in one convenient place! On September 1, 2010, the ABA launched a new feature to help members manage their discussion lists. The new List Portal can be found on your personalized ABA page. Here's how to get started:
1. Log in to the ABA site. (If you need help remembering your password, there is a "Forgot Your Password" link.)
2. Scroll down to the box called "Lists" and click on the link.
3. You'll be taken to a page that shows all the lists you're currently subscribed to. (This is also the page to visit if you'd like to unsubscribe from any lists.)
4. The page also has a link to other lists you're eligible to join. If you're a lawyer in ABA Family Law, you'll see the "FamLawESQ" list on this page and the option to subscribe to it.
If you're a student member of Family Law, you'll see "FamLawStudents" and "FamLaw."
Our associate and lawyer members should see "FamLaw" as well.
Tips:
a. In order to receive email from our topical lists (such as Assisted Reproductive Technology, Law Practice Management, or Custody), you must now actually be enrolled as a member of those committees.
You can join these committees (and more) from your personalized MyABA page--just click on the link in the Committees box.
b. Keep in mind that only one (1) email address can be associated with your member record. This is the email address to which all your ABA list mail will be delivered.
Updating your email address is easy; just log in to the ABA website, click on the "Edit" link in your "Personal Information" box and make the changes there.
c. Remember that you can only send email to list(s) from the email address that is subscribed to the list(s).
d. Keep your ABA Family Law membership up-to-date so you don't miss out on important messages from your colleagues (and, of course, us).
