Registration Deadline Approaches for BLI 2010
Registration will close in just 3 weeks for the ABA's 2010 Bar Leadership Institute, scheduled for March 11-12 at Chicago's Downtown Marriott. The annual meeting, which helps incoming bar leaders prepare to take the reins of their associations, draws more than 300 attendees. Registration ends February 19.
2009 BAI Released
The Division for Bar Services has released its latest Bar Activities Inventory, an encyclopedic report of bar association operations. The 2009 BAI contains more than 3,000 bar association statistics from almost 200 bar associations. Order it here.

New Report on Employment of Disabled Lawyers
The ABA recently released a report on the employment of lawyers with disabilities. The ABA Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law, which published the report, also recently began an effort to have legal employers sign a pledge for disability diversity at their organizations.

New Web Site Reports on Federal Circuit Court Cases
A new ABA Web site reports on cases in Federal Circuit Courts. The site briefly summarizes opinions on "newsworthy and legally significant cases" decided by Federal Courts of Appeals. Free alerts are also available.

Lawyers Needed to Judge ABA Negotiation Competition…
The ABA is seeking licensed attorneys to serve as judges for an upcoming negotiation competition. Judges will evaluate the negotiating skills of 24 finalists. The competition will take place during the ABA Midyear Meeting, February 5-6 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Volunteers can sign up using this online form.

…And to Judge ABA Moot Court Competitions
The ABA Law Student Division seeks licensed attorneys to serve as moot court competition judges in six US cities. The competitions will be held in late February and early March at federal and municipal courthouses in Boston, Brooklyn, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, DC.

Judges may earn CLE if the state in which the competition takes place provides credit for judging law student moot court competitions. Click here for details.

Video Trains Lawyers to Help Vets
The ABA has released a new video to help recruit and train pro bono volunteers to handle veterans' issues. The video, called A Primer on Veterans Administration Law, Practice and Procedure, meets training requirements mandated by the Veterans Administration for attorneys representing claimants before the Veterans Administration.

The video can be ordered free of charge through the ABA Web Store.

New BoardLink Online
The Winter 2010 issue of BoardLink, the Division for Bar Services' quarterly newsletter on effective board practices, is now online.

LRE Network Database
Check out the ABA's LRE Network Web site, which provides information about national, state, and local LRE programs; resources, such as publications and fact sheets; professional development opportunities; and a database of law-related programs around the nation.

Lawyers Sought to Help At-Risk Teens
The ABA Division for Public Education is seeking legal professionals to mentor teens through its Championing Our Students (COS) project. Mentors help young people understand the role of law in our society while helping them building skills to succeed in school and life. Nomination Period Opens for Legal Services Award
The ABA is accepting nominations for the 2010 Harrison Tweed Award, which recognizes bar association projects and programs that increase legal services access for the poor. The award will be presented in August at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, for work done during the year beginning April 1, 2009. Projects that began before that date will be considered if substantial services have been provided between April 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010.

Nomination Period Opens for Professionalism Award
The Standing Committee on Professionalism is accepting nominations for the E. Smythe Gambrell Awards, which recognize projects that enhance lawyer professionalism. Bar associations and other law-related organizations are eligible. Up to three winners will receive the $3,500 award, to be presented during the ABA's 2010 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Applications Being Accepted for Internship Program
The ABA Section of Litigation is now accepting applications for the Summer 2010 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). The program provides summer internships with federal or state judges to minorities and the financially disadvantaged. Nomination Period Opens for Solo and Small Firm Award
The nomination period is open for the 2010 Solo and Small Firm Awards, which honor dedication to the practice of law as general practitioners or solo or small firm lawyers. The nomination deadline is February 26. The awards will be presented at the ABA's 2010 Spring Meeting in St. Thomas, USVI in May. For more on the awards, click here.
Nomination Period Opens for Environmental Award
The ABA Standing Committee on Environmental Law is accepting nominations for the 2010 Award for Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy. One award will be bestowed on an individual lawyer and one on an organization. The nomination deadline is Friday, March 26. For more information, click here and scroll to the "What's New" box.

Web Site to Report on Fed Court Happenings
An upcoming ABA Web site will report on newsworthy cases in Federal Circuit Courts. The site will provide short summaries of Circuit Court opinions of public interest and cases pending oral argument.

Deadline approaching for the National Online Youth Summit.
A December 9 deadline has been announced to register for the ABA's National Online Youth Summit. The 12-week, web-based program encourages high school students to learn about and critically evaluate a timely, law-related topic.

Nomination Period Opens for Legal Services Award
Nominations are being accepted for the 2010 ABA Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access. The award recognizes innovations in the delivery of legal services to those of moderate incomes. The nomination deadline is December 12.
Nomination Period Opens for Pro Bono Award
The ABA Senior Lawyers Division is accepting nominations for the 2010 John H. Pickering Achievement Award. The award honors pro bono activities and law-related societal issues affecting the elderly. The nomination deadline is February 26.

Miami's Angones Wins Diversity Award
ABA Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services member Frank Angones is among five winners of the ABA's annual Spirit of Excellence Awards. The awards honor lawyers who promote racial and ethnic diversity in the legal profession. Angones is a new appointment to the committee, which oversees the work of the Division for Bar Services. He is a past president of the Florida Bar and current partner in the Miami firm Angones, McClure & Garcia P.A.

Application Period Opens for YLD Subgrant Program
Nominations are being accepted for the ABA Young Lawyers Division's Subgrant Program. The program provides funding to young lawyer organizations for activities that benefit local communities, leaders, or members. The application deadline is March 1.
