Attempting to send a clear message to a nation 7,000 miles away, the ABA and other bars across the country have vigorously campaigned to support the lawyers and judges being detained by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

In its most public display of support for the lawyers, the ABA staged a rally November 14 in Washington, DC. An estimated 600-700 lawyers participated, marching past the Supreme Court and demanding an end to martial law in Pakistan.

Other bars have held and are planning similar marches. The Division for Bar Services has posted a Web page tracking state and local bar response.

The ABA is raising awareness of the crisis through an online toolkit. The toolkit includes a letter to Musharraf from ABA President Bill Neukom, and audio and video interviews from the November 14 rally. Also featured is an online petition from the lawyers of America. More than 10,000 supporters have signed the petition, which will be presented to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington.

The ABA's Division for Public Education has presented its 2007 Isidore Starr Award to the State Bar of Texas' Jan Miller. Miller, the bar's Law-Related Education director, was honored for her work on several educational programs for teachers and students. Said Victoria Hughes, president of the Bill of Rights Institute, which Miller helped to develop a seminar series for Texas teachers: "There is no better friend or partner in the field of civic education."

Three former bar presidents are among winners of the ABA's Spirit of Excellence Awards, which honor lawyers and judges who promote diversity in the legal profession.

Past presidents Lawrence Baca (National Native American Bar), Christopher Arriola (Santa Clara County Bar and California La Raza Lawyers Association), and Mia Yamamoto (Japanese American Bar Association) will join four other honorees at the association's 2008 Midyear Meeting in Los Angeles.

The Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services is seeking nominees for its 2008 Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access. The award, to be presented at the association's midyear meeting in Los Angeles, recognizes innovation in the delivery of legal services to those with moderate incomes.

The ABA Section of Litigation is accepting applications for a minority internship program. Called the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program, it places minorities in summer jobs with state and federal judges. Last year the program placed 167 of 400 applicants.
