CIA general counsel stresses authorization before information collection

By John Glynn

Robert Eatinger, senior deputy general counsel, Central Intelligence Agency, explains to an audience of national security lawyers that there must be an authorized intelligence purpose to collect any information on citizens, and that collection process always involves legal counsel behind the scenes.

Eatinger spoke on Oct. 31 during the 23rd Annual Review of the Field of National Security Law, hosted by the ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security.
