ABA book aims to help lawyers manage the business of practicing law

By Irma Romero

CHICAGO, Nov. 21, 2013 — Today, more than ever, being a lawyer is about much more than practicing law. The American Bar Association Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division (GPSolo) has published a new book to help lawyers manage the administrative and business demands of their practices.

“Run Your Firm Like a Business” is written by a successful law firm consultant who has spent many years developing and refining systems to help manage law practices — and to free up lawyers to do what they do best. This 140-page book explains how lawyers can use time more effectively to generate business and shows how to outsource administrative tasks through organization, staffing and technology.

Specific areas addressed include effective information management systems, how to choose good clients and employees, marketing, timekeeping, billing and collection systems, business operations and much more.

The author, Frank Lockwood, is a former attorney who founded Lockwood Professional Development LLC to help lawyers and small-business owners learn and implement successful business principles. Lockwood, who is based out of Durango, Colo., has specialized in family law, mediation and negotiation, and law firm systems for the past 30 years.
