ABA Consumer Protection Conference Features High-Profile Speakers on The Future of Consumer Protection, Privacy, Advertising Laws

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 17, 2013 — The biennial 2013 American Bar Association Consumer Protection Conference, presented by the Section of Antitrust Law at George Washington University in Washington, D.C, will focus on the future of consumer protection, privacy and advertising laws. Speakers include representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, state enforcers and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well as scholars, consumer advocates and other professionals in consumer protection and privacy.

Specifically, the conference will cover consumer protection priorities; the evolution of U.S. and EU privacy law enforcement; hot topics in advertising, including the trend toward third party liability; and new rules for consumer financial service marketing practices. Attendees also will have the opportunity to network with experts.

Program highlights include:

  • Keynote Address: NAAG Presidential Privacy Initiative, 9:45 – 10:15 a.m. Douglas F. Gansler, attorney general of Maryland, will discuss his initiative as the president of the National Association of Attorneys General regarding the challenges posed by the growth of the Internet and emerging technologies, and business models that challenge the ability to control with whom private information is shared.
  • Financial Consumer Protection: What’s Next for Consumers and Industry?, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Financial issues continue to be top of mind for consumers and businesses. How will the FTC, the state attorneys general and others move forward to protect consumers and encourage economic growth?
  • The “New Social and Mobile Media”: Evolving Too Rapidly for Effective Regulation?, 1:15 – 2:30 p.m. Professor Eric Goldman will present a provocative paper raising concerns that government regulators cannot keep up with the exponential growth in the use of social media and the rapid change in mobile devices. When consumers increasingly choose to publish personal information, where should or can government draw the line? As social media evolves, what should the government’s role be? A reactor panel including Mary Ellen Callahan of the Department of Homeland Security, FTC Commissioner Julie Brill, and James A. Dudukovich, marketing counsel, Coca-Cola North America will discuss these issues.
  • Hot Topics in Advertising, 4 – 5:15 p.m. A dynamic panel will explore emerging topics in advertising litigation and counseling. Is the trend toward liability for parties other than the advertiser real or imagined? Are the FTC’s substantiation and endorsement rules being effectively applied to online advertising? Among the speakers will be Mary K. Engle, associate director of the FTC’s Division of Advertising Practices, and David Mallen, director, National Advertising Division, Advertising Self-Regulatory Council, New York.
