The American Bar Association applauds the Senate for making concrete, bipartisan progress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
The Senate bill includes provisions that enhance due process and judicial review in immigration proceedings. Common-sense reforms to improve fairness and efficiency, such as implementation of the DREAM Act and expanded oversight of detention facilities, will increase confidence in our immigration system. Critically, the most vulnerable noncitizens — including children and the mentally disabled — would have access to legal counsel.
The House of Representatives now has the responsibility to make our country’s immigration laws sounder and extend fundamental legal protections to the most vulnerable in society. Our nation does not need a perfect bill; we need a realistic strategy to bring millions out of the shadows — we need the House of Representatives to pass a comprehensive immigration bill.
